Hydroton (also known as LECA), is a pelletized expanded clay aggregate that is commonly used in hydroponic gardening. We use it in all of our Jungleboxes as a drainage layer underneath soil and other substrates. Hydroton is an excellent drainage layer because it is much lighter than aquarium gravel, has a neutral PH, promotes beneficial bacterial growth, and can be sterilized and reused over and over. Rinse well before use. Price is for 4 dry quarts. (One bag is roughly enough for a 1" layer in a standard 10 gallon aquarium or 2 vertical 10 gallon tanks.
These are wild collected oak leaves that have been thoroughly boiled and baked to eliminate potential pests and parasites. These are excellent to use in dart frog tanks to provide a natural look and hiding spots for the inhabitants. It is surprising how much more often skittish frogs are visible when they have the security of a layer of leaf litter in their enclosures. These can also be boiled with distilled or Reverse Osmosis water to create a weak "tea" that can be very helpful to developing tadpoles. Sold in 1 gallon bags (roughly enough to create an adequate layer in 2-3 standard 10 gallon enclosures).
Like Oak, Magnolia leaves are also excellent additions to the terrarium, both to provide hiding spots for the inhabitants, and to create niches for microfauna to establish. These leaves range in size from 3-8", and have been pre-boiled to eliminate pests/parasites. Price is for a 1 gallon bag.
Manzanita is a low-growing tree/shub common to the US Southwest. Manzanita wood is very dense, and consequently holds up for long periods of time in damp or humid environments like vivariums. Most of the pieces that we stock are twisted with lots of character.
These natural coconut halves serve as ideal breeding sites for most medium to large sized dart frogs.
An extremely versatile terrarium substrate, coco husk chips can be used alone as a soil substitute, or amended with other components such as sphagnum moss to create an ideal growing mix. These chips are also appropriate to be used as springtail culturing media. Price is for a one gallon bag.
